Getting Started

Before you commit to begin making your own products, it's important to make sure that you can purchase the ingredients in bulk or at least in recyclable packaging, if you are looking to reduce your waste. Take a look at the ingredient list and directions. Some recipes require expensive ingredients like shea butter and some require a stove top and double boiler. It's also important to decide how quickly you will be using this product. Double the batch if you know you won't have access to the ingredients or a stove top for a certain period of time. And always make sure you have a sustainable container for your product!

Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp baking soda

  • 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil

 

Directions:

  1. Simply mix together until fully combined.

Notes:

  1. Because of the baking soda, this toothpaste will taste rather salty and takes time get used to. The peppermint essential oil adds more flavor, but it doesn't mask it.

  2. It is also very important to note that coconut oil should not go down the drain, as it can cause pipe problems in the future (trust us on this). We recommend you spit in the compost for this one.

Toothpowder

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp activated charcoal

  • 3 tbsp bentonite clay

  • 1 tbsp baking soda

  • 1 tbsp xylitol (optional)

  • 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together then add essential oil and mix again. Should dissolve right in. Place in desired container. 

Notes:

  1. DO NOT MIX WITH METAL. Metal deactivates the beneficial properties in bentonite clay. Mix with a wooden or plastic spoon.

Deodorant

Sensitive Skin Deodorant

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp shea butter

  • 4 tbsp arrowroot powder

  • 3 tbsp cornstarch 

  • 5-10 drops essential oil of your choice

Directions:

  1. Make a double boiler by placing glass bowl over small pot with about an inch of water. 

  2. Bring water to boil

  3. Place coconut oil and shea butter in bowl, mix and let them melt

  4. Turn off heat and add arrowroot powder and magnesium hydroxide powder and stir until completely smooth.

  5. Mix in the essential oil 

  6. Transfer to desired container and place in refrigerator for 1-2 hours

Notes:

  1. The deodorant will not be ready immediately after you take it out of the fridge. Let it adjust to room temperature before use.

  2. If you find that your deo is a little creamier than usual, stick it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes so it solidifies!

  3. Many people find that when they switch the natural deodorant, it doesn't work for them. Give your body a few weeks to adjust and rid of built up toxins from previously used conventional deodorant.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp shea butter

  • 3 tbsp baking soda

  • 2 tbsp arrowroot powder (or cornstarch/magnesium hydroxide powder

  • 5-10 drops of essential oil of choice

Directions:

  1. Make a double-boiler by placing a glass bowl over a small pot with about an inch or so of water (make sure water doesn't touch bottom of bowl). Bring water to a simmer.

  2. Add coconut oil and shea butter to the bowl and let them melt.

  3. Remove from heat and add baking soda and arrowroot powder, and stir until completely smooth.

  4. Mix in essential oil of your choice.

  5. Pour into desired container and let harden before using. Apply daily as needed.

Notes:

  1. Baking soda can cause irritation in some people, even rashes. Test it out and see how your skin reacts. I had irritation my first time and switched to another deodorant.

Liquid Deodorant

Ingredients:

  • Aloe vera

  • Witch hazel

  • 5-10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

  • 1 tsp lemon juice (optional- helps preserve the mixture.)

Directions:

  1. Combine equal parts aloe and witch hazel in a food processor until foamy.

  2. Pour into desired container and add eucalyptus essential oil.

Notes:

  1. Application may be cleaner and easier if used in a spray bottle. Spray 2-3 times a day

  2. Keeps for up to a week, maybe two with lemon

Body Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cups coconut oil

  • 1/4 cups shea butter

  • 1/4 cups cocoa butter

  • 1/4 cups sweet almond oil

  • 5 drops essential oil (we use lavender)

 

Directions:

  1. Make a double boiler with a pot and glass bowl

  2. Turn to medium heat

  3. Put all ingredients into bowl and wait for them to melt

  4. Store in fridge for 1 hour and then whip with hand mixer for 5-10 minutes or until consistent to whipped cream

  5. Add essential oil and mix

  6. Store in desired container

Lip Balm

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp bees wax or bees wax pastilles (or candelilla wax as a vegan alternative)

  • 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil

  • 1 tsp jojoba oil

  • 5-10 drops essential oil (peppermint)

Directions:

  1. In a double boiler, melt down the bees wax about half way

  2. Add coconut oil

  3. After it's all melted, stir in vitamin E oil

  4. Pour into desired container and let cool

Face Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1 tbsp beeswax

  • 1/2 tbsp shea butter

  • 5 drops of tea tree essential oil (optional)

 

Directions:

  1. Melt olive oil and beeswax together in a double boiler​ or place a small glass bowl in a large pot with about 2 inches of water

  2. Once completely melted down, remove bowl from heat and wait for it to cool down, about 3-5 minutes

  3. Add essenital oil and shea butter and combine

  4. Place in desired container.

Notes

  1. I recommend using extra virgin, organic olive oil for best quality. I used non-organic once and it smelled weird and it just wasn't good. Any brand will do as long as it's extra virgin and organic.

  2. Add more or less beeswax depending on how thick you want it to be. I usually eyeball it, but too much beeswax will make it hard for the cream to absorb well into your skin and too little will make it creamier/oilier, but it's also preference.

  3. Adding too much shea butter will make it sticky and oilier, go light on the shea butter. I usually do a generous half tablespoon.

  4. I also like to add tea tree essential oil due to its antimicrobial benefits, which helps fight bacteria cells which is good for acne prone skin.

Face Wash

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup organic avocado oil (use grape seed oil for more severe acne prone skin)

  • 3 tbsp honey (raw or unpasteurized and preferably local)

  • 2 tbsp castile soap

Directions:

  1. Whisk vigorously until fully combined.

Notes:

  1. I didn't whisk hard enough the first time, so your face wash should look a lot creamer and lighter than the image.

Dry Shampoo

Ingredients:

  • Cornstarch

  • Cocoa powder

  • 5 drops preferred essential oil

Directions:

  1. Take equal parts of cornstarch and cocoa powder and whisk together in a bowl

  2. Mix in essential oil (I use lavender)

Notes: 

  1. For lighter hair, just use cornstarch or arrowroot powder. For dark hair, use dark cocoa powder and/or charcoal. For red hair, use the recipe above, but use more cornstarch than cocoa powder.

  2. To apply, use a make-up powder brush a poof onto your roots. We have a highlight on our instagram titled "dry shampoo" of Geevie showing how it's done.

Lip Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 tsp brown sugar

  • 1 tsp honey

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Directions:

  1. Mix together until fully combined 

Notes:

  1. To apply, use your finger and give your lips a good scrub. Make sure to moisturize your lips afterwards 

Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • Matcha powder

  • French Clay 

  • Ground oats

  • Ground quinoa

Directions:

  1. Mix equal parts of all ingredients together in a bowl and place in desired contianer. 

  2. To use, gently scrub face and leave on to use as a face mask if desired, but only leave on fro 10 minutes maximum.

Conditioner

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Apple cider vinegar

  • 2 parts filtered water

  • 10 drops essential oil of choice (optional. we use Rosemary)

  • Spray bottle

Directions:​

  1. Combine apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle and add desired essential oil

  2. To use, spray on roots of hair/scalp in the shower after shampooing and let sit for the remainder of your shower. Rinse out right before getting out.

Notes:

  1. This conditioner does not detangle hair in the shower, it is meant to add shine and make hair softer/healthier. 

  2. I use to NEED a detangling conditioner in the shower, but now just use this and my hair is much healtheir. I put my hair in a towel after my shower, wait maybe 10 minutes and hen brush it out and add a little Argan oil to my ends.

  3. This conditioenr also battles dandruff. Spray (or even pour, avoiding your eyes) onto your scalp in the shower and let sit for 5 minutes and then rinse off. Repeating this every shower will make dandruff go away.

  4. Your hair will smell like apple cider vinegar when its wet. The smell goes away when it dries, but if you sweat or your hair gets wet again, you will most liekly smell it again. I used to HATE the smell but have grown to like it over time and now I love it haha.

Acne/Blemish Treatment

Tea Tree Oil Diluted with a Carrier Oil


Tea tree oil has strong antibacterial properties and it is most commonly used in skin care products to battle acne. But it can be vey strong so it needs to be dilluted with a carrier oil, otherwise it can burn the skin. Oils such as jojoba oil, olive oil, rosehip oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and moringa oil. Pour oil into an oil roller and add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil.
Apply to a blemish a few times a day.
Before applying on face, test it out on your wrist to see how your skin reacts to it.

Body Lotion Bar

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1/4 cup beeswax

  • 1/4 cup shea butter

  • 15-20 drops essential oil (optional)

Directions:​

  1. Using a double boiler, melt wax and olive oil until completley melted

  2. Add shea butter and wait for it to melt

  3. Turn off heat and add essential oil of choise and mix

  4. Pour into mold and let sit for 1 - 2 hours or until completley solidified

Notes:

  1. If your bars are too oily or not oily enough, melt your bars down again and add more wax or shea butter depending on your preference.

Armpit Detox

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp bentonite clay

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1-3 tsp water

Directions:

  1. Using a wooden or plastic spoon, scoop 1 tbsp of bentonite clay into a small bowl

  2. Combine apple cider vinegar and water, more or less to get the right consistency. Shouls be paste like, but smooth

  3. Apply an even layer to both armpits and let sit for 5 minutes, arm up, then rinse in the shower or with a warm, wet wrag

Notes:​

  1. DO NOT USE METAL. Metal deactivates the beneficial properties in bentonite clay

  2. If you experience irritation, remove immedietly

  3. To get the full effects of an armpit detoc, repeat daily, lengthen the duration you keep it on, gradually. The first few times you do it, keep it on for 5 minutes or less. Then the next week of earlier, go for 10. Do whatever feels good to you, but definielty start out slow.

Makeup Remover

Ingredients:

  • Witch Hazel

  • Filtered water

  • a few drops of avocado oil (olive oil works too)

Directions:

  1. Combine equal parts of witch hazel and water in a jar/vile

  2. Add oil of choice. A few drops will do, depending on the size of your container. If your vile if 2oz, you can teaspon of oil.
